Abstract

This article investigates the way in which archives are managed in NZ museum settings. It explores how archival values are maintained in the management of museum collections. It also considers the degree to which archival values are acknowledged and understood in a museum setting. The article also provides definitions of the terminology used in discussing the findings and the data collection instruments. Finally it reviews the literature dedicated to the management of museum archives. Discusses the issues identified in both a national and an international context.

Author Biography

Catherine Jehly

Catherine Jehly (Te Arawa) is the Collections Manager at Te Awamutu Museum and is responsible for the museum’s collections and research service. She has over 10 years experience in museum collection management, previously working as Archivist at Te Awamutu Museum and Assistant Curator Māori / Taonga Database at Auckland Museum. Catherine holds an Honours degree in Social Anthropology and Māori Development and a Master of Information Studies. She is passionate about community archives, taonga Māori and digital access to heritage collections.
